I still remember the exact moment I decided to hunt down the Cogfly tool in Hollow Knight: Silksong. I was deep into Pharloom in my 2026 playthrough, and a flying enemy had just made me look foolish by dodging every single nail strike. Hornet needed backup. That little mechanical fly seemed like the perfect answer. It may look small, but once I understood how to reach the High Halls, I realized the journey was just as demanding as the reward.

Why I Wanted the Cogfly

I quickly learned that Cogfly is not just a novelty. The small fly companions are brilliant in battle, especially when the enemy likes to fly around a lot. They give Hornet a way to keep pressure on airborne foes without constantly chasing them. What really sold me was the quest The Great Taste of Pharloom. In that challenge, Hornet must deliver the Courier's Rasher within the time limit and without getting hit. Having Cogfly companions helped me manage the enemies along the route while I stayed focused on speed and avoiding damage. I also found out later that Cogfly pairs perfectly with the Pollip Pouch, which you can obtain during the Rite of the Pollip quest. Together, they let the fly companions apply venom and deal extra damage.

Required Skills and Materials

Before I set off, I made sure I had two movement skills unlocked.

I already had those skills, but if you are missing either one, exploring the High Halls will be impossible. The route uses both constantly.

Finding the Road to High Halls

There are two ways to start the trip. If you already learned the Conductor's Melody in Silksong, you can begin at the top western corner of the Choral Chambers and follow that same path. Just remember to head left before gliding down to reach the station and the bench. On my first attempt, I was not familiar with that route, so I traveled to the Grand Bellway and made my way to the Cogwork Dancers boss room. From that boss room, I headed left and stayed in the same direction until a bench appeared.

Climbing Through the High Halls

Once I reached the bench, I double jumped and used Clawline to harpoon the needle into the rings and go higher. I repeated the same steps with the rest of the rings until I reached the top. Then I moved right into a wide horizontal room with running water and several platforms. At that point, Hornet was officially in the High Halls. I jumped across the platforms and hooked onto rings whenever necessary to move into the next room.

The next section asked me to look up. A giant spinning wheel dominated the room. I harpooned into one of its rings to go up, then did the same to the upper wheel. By mixing the double jump with the Clawline, I climbed higher and entered the room to the right. That room reminded me of the first High Halls area. Platforms were packed with enemies, and I had to hook onto floating rings to keep moving forward safely. It was tense, but manageable.

Then came the trickiest part. I looked down and glided while avoiding the spikes, then quickly used Clawline to hang onto a ring. That action removed the spike obstacles and revealed a path down. I kept going down using the same technique until I finally spotted an enemy across a path to the left. I entered the left room, and at the end of the path sat the Cogfly tool.

Constructing and Equipping Cogfly

I inspected the tool and used one Craftmetal to construct it. Craftmetal is not too hard to find if you know where to look. You can buy it from merchants like Pebb at the start of the game in Bone Bottom. You can also find it while exploring Pharloom, such as in The Marrow near Hunter's March or at the end of the Lake in Fleatopia. After constructing the Cogfly, I rested on a bench and equipped it. From then on, my little mechanical flies were ready for battle. Later, I combined them with the Pollip Pouch to add venom damage, which made them even more effective in the Great Taste of Pharloom and against any annoying flying enemy.
