I've spent countless hours in Hollow Knight: Silksong, and if there's one quest that truly tests your patience and platforming skills, it's the Great Taste of Pharloom. You'll find Mergwin, an ever-loyal old man, in a massive abandoned dining hall within the Choral Chambers. He's trying to serve his master a proper meal, and he needs your help. The reward? Pale Oil, which leads to a crucial needle upgrade. It's 2026, and this quest is still a rite of passage for any serious player. Let me walk you through every step, from the prerequisites to the final delivery, so you don't end up pulling your hair out.

Pre-Requisites: Don't Skip These

Before you even think about gathering ingredients, you need to have a few things squared away. I learned this the hard way. If something isn't working, check this list first:

  • Discover key locations: Mosshome, Greymoor, Bellhart, Sands of Karak, and Sinner's Road. You'll be visiting all of them.

  • Complete the Berry Picking quest for the Druid in Mosshome. This unlocks the Mossberry Stew later.

  • Save both Couriers by finishing the My Missing Courier and My Missing Brother quests. You'll need them for the Courier's Rasher.

  • Obtain the Clawline for navigating the Sands of Karak. Essential for the Crustnut.

  • Get the Faydown Cloak to reach the destination on Sinner's Road. You'll need it to even start the Pickled Muckmaggot fight.

Ingredient #1: Mossberry Stew 🍲

This is the easiest one. Mergwin's hint mentions a Druidic recipe, so I headed back to the Druid in Mosshome. She's happy to give you a drop of soup. No combat, no platforming—just a nice chat. You can bring it back to Mergwin right away, but there's no time limit, so I recommend grabbing it and continuing with the rest.

Ingredient #2: Vintage Nectar 🧪

We're looking for some old, all-ages-appropriate battery acid. The only guy serving anything that strong is at the Halfway House in Greymoor. Speak to Creige, and he'll offer to sell you the Vintage Nectar for 480 Rosaries. That's steep, so I hope you've been saving. Once you pay, you'll need to head down into the cellar. Slash some rats, then get to the bottom where the bottle is. Of course, ants love juice, so they'll swarm you. The fight isn't too bad at this point, and they only spawn one wave. Clear the whole cellar, and the bottle is yours.

Ingredient #3: Courier's Rasher 🥩

This is the big one. Finding the Couriers in Bellhart is easy, but delivering the package is a nightmare. They like their meat drippy, which means it expires in about five minutes. It also expires much faster if you take any damage. You need to bring it all the way from Bellhart to Mergwin in the Citadel within that time, with no fast travel. I've done this run multiple times, and it never gets less stressful.

My route: start at the bottom of Shellwood, go through four room transitions, then head up and platform through Blasted Steps. Take the Spa through the Citadel to reach Mergwin. If you're quick, you'll have about three hits to spare. Before attempting this, equip the Silkspeed Anklets for obvious reasons, and the Weavelight so you always have silk to keep running or grappling. Trust me, every second counts.

Ingredient #4: Crustnut 🌰

If you've visited the Sands of Karak before, you know it's precarious. Getting the Crustnut is no laughing matter, despite the silly name. You'll need to come in from the left, or go up past the Thief's Den in the Blasted Steps. Once you're in that tall, vertical drop in the dead center of the area, head to the middle-most room on the left, above Shakra's usual location and below the path to Coral Tower. Here, you'll contend with a ton of spikes. Bring a long, sharp weapon crest. With smart grappling and the sensibility to not touch the oddly alluring red spikes, you'll make your way left and grab that crusty nut.

Ingredient #5: Pickled Muckmaggot 🐛

Simultaneously the most difficult and one of the simplest to get. Head to Sinner's Road, to the right of where all the cages are on the map, and use your wings to soar up to an area you couldn't reach before. This starts the fight with the Disgraced Chef Lugoli. This fight is hard, even late in the game. I recommend stocking your favorite crest, using Sting Shards for crowd control, and having Parry as your silk skill. The parry move isn't too hard to get—just trek through The Mist, play your needolin to some butterflies, and fight a very feisty woman. It helps a ton here because Lugoli's choreographs give you plenty of time to react, but not much leniency in moving. Once you've slain her, you'll get the Pickled Muckmaggot.

Getting Your Reward and Upgrade

Once you give the final ingredient to Mergwin, his master will promptly come out to devour his meal. You'll see that beautiful, delectable Pale Oil freed from its chassis. Now, there's only one thing left to do. Head to Bellhart, grab 500 Rosaries—because you definitely haven't spent enough already—and go up to that second home up top. This third nail upgrade makes the final fights a massive bit easier. It almost makes delivering the Rasher feel worth it. Almost.

So there you have it. The Great Taste of Pharloom is a marathon, not a sprint. But with this guide, you should be able to tackle it without too much grief. Good luck, and may your Rasher stay fresh. 🎮
